If you’re anything like me, you love great looking hair, but have no idea how to do it yourself. Being a model makes me privy to having a master stylist at my need; however, he is VERY busy, so instead of taming my long, heavy brunette locks every time I need to be styled, he sat me down and taught me these 4 go-to looks for fashion… And now I’m teaching them to you.
Don’t be scared. It’s ok! I was scared too! I didn’t take cosmetology I took automotive mechanics in high school! I can fix a car but I’ll be damned if I can backcomb my own hair…. Until now…
HERE ARE THE TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:
1 pack hair pins
1 pack bobby pins
1 j band
1 bottle “TAKE SHAPE” hairspray J Beverly Hills (retail $29 @ Edges Salon and Spa)
^^^^ (WHY THIS ONE??? It is a WORKABLE hairspray, meaning, you can spray your hair over and over again and it wont feel hard or unmoving, its actually an amazing product)
1 bottle “volumeis” volumizing powder by J Beverly Hills (retail $25 @ Edges Salon and Spa
1 tub “clear wax” by J Beverly Hills (retail $24 @ Edges Salon and Spa
Backcombing comb
1 topsy tail
1 bubble wand (or curling wand)
1 straightener
Optional
Various broken jewelry or random gem pieces
One sided stick able Velcro circles (available at your local craft store)
STAY TUNED FOR PART 2 WITH SOME FANCIER TRICKS INVOLVED!!!!
STEP 1
“Half the battle”
The most time consuming part of styling high fashion hair, is the initial curling. All of these styles involve a curl of some kind, so best to go ahead and curl your whole head.
PART 1: SECTIONS
There are 5 sections on your head.
2 Sides: from centre of brow draw an imaginary line up and back over your head. This determines your side sections.
Top: same imaginary lines you drew above (centre of brow) take the top section and score it off at the crown of the head (where the head begins to curve downward)
Back 2: take back section, split in half horizontally, clip accordingly
HOW TO CURL USING BUBBLE WAND
Start from the bottom section of hair (section5)
Separate into 3 pieces. Lightly spray the sections. Begin to curl. To do so, hold hair in one hand and wrap around bubble wand starting at about 3inches down the length of the hair from the scalp. Wrap the hair around and around itself on the wand.
HOLD FOR APPROPRIATE TIME FOR THICKNESS OF HAIR
(We all saw that one YouTube video right?)
There is no specified time limit as everyone’s hair is different, so my master stylists advise?
“Hold thumb/finger over the wrapped hair, when your thumb/finger begins to heat up, remove the hair (and the hand) from the wand.
Let hair fall back into place and repeat with remaining sections
WHAT DIRECTION DO YOU CURL!?
When holding the wand yourself, on the right side turn clockwise and from left turn counter clockwise
Curl with straightener:
Place hair in straightener again about 3inches in, half turn the straightener and:
Pull slowly for a relaxed curl
Pull fast and hard while twisting it more to make a tighter curl.
NOW WE’RE HALFWAY DONE!!!!!!
That wasn’t so hard was it?
LOOK 1: Flat top
Section into 5
Top: taking small portions you will backcomb the hair piece by piece and leave piled on top (can clip to side if needed while styling the remaining)
Sides: on one side section, grab small piece behind the ear, and back comb towards scalp with 3 strokes max.
Then grab a small piece in front of the ear and backcomb that the same way.
Repeat on opposite side
From the top section (following the line of the hair from side sect to top sect) , take a small section (bout 1cm) from one side, and either twist or French braid towards the back.
Repeat on opposite
Then either pin the two twists with bobby pins (wavy side of b.pin going towards the scalp, flat side facing out)
Or continue to braid the two stands together and secure at base.
Flatten and smooth top out with backcombing brush,
Pepper the sides with volumeis powder and pull and expand the hair. (See clip below)
If you’re worried about your heavier hair falling Jason is about to show you how to pin to add volume (rather than tie it to the head)
VOILA!!!
Long pony
Make the 5 sections
Using the bottom section, place at nape of neck, make a ponytail, and using a J band, hook, pull, wrap around the hair securing the ponytail.
Take the next back section going as high as you can, take J band, secure, wrap, making another pony about 4inches higher than the first
Take the top of the highest pony tail spread wide around first pony and twirl together from inside out,
Taking one side section pull under the bottom pony, through the middle of the two ponies, up and circle around high pony and pin to secure.
Opposite side pull over high pony. Through middle, secure at bottom. (Let tail curl with hair, don’t hide and pin)
Top section
Make a S shape and place slightly off centre from face, and pin using hair pin.
If you see holes in the back group together with hair pin (NOT BOBBY PIN)
Once done touch up curls final spray and off you go!!!
GET RID OF FRIZ, rub clear wax into hands and smooth over wherever there is frizz
High pony
Half moon section
(Make a line from the Corner of your eyebrow to the centre of opposite brow, take the combs edge diagonally through the hair and section into “half moon”)
To get the ultimate height on the hair, grab hair, pull up and twist the hair, (this picks up stray baby hairs)
(Or for dramatic underside French braid your head upside down) (NOT FOR BEGINNERS! )
Secure at top with j band
Push all bumps to centre (towards pony) with backcomb brush
Take moon section, pull to opposite side of head and smooth
Sweep and wrap moon section around pony, secure with hair pin
(Backcomb pony for height)
OPTIONAL:
Using old jewelry or leather pin one end at the pony base and wrap around the hair in opposite direction to the hair hold in place with hair pins.
Messy bun
Section same as high pony
Loose braid the tail of pony
Shake the braid until it almost falls out of form.
Tuck the tail of the pony to the base of the pony with a bobby pin.
Loose braid front section,
Pull through centre of bun
Spread open braid and hair pin at either side (loosely pin)
Spray to finish
Optional:
Stick one sided Velcro to the back of broken jewelry and attack into hair at chosen positions for added flair.
